Maryland's Arbovirus Surveillance Testing Results 2008

The 2008 surveillance season runs from June 1 - October 31, 2008
Arbovirus = arthropod-borne virus

Avian:

The Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene has discontinued its dead bird surveillance program. The U.S. Department of Defense and the Maryland Departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources continue to monitor WNV and other disease activity in wild and captive birds throughout the State.

No birds have tested positive for WNV in 2008.


Equine:

Two horses in Frederick and Prince George's County has tested positive for WNV infection.


Mosquito Pools (Pool = group of mosquitoes):

Twenty-three (23) mosquito pools in three jurisdictions have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Humans:

Fourteen (14) cases of WNV (11 confirmed, 3 probable) have been identified in Maryland in 2008.
