Maryland's Arbovirus Surveillance
Testing Results 2002


Avian

A total of 1634 dead birds were tested in the 2002 surveillance season. A total of 604 birds tested positive for West Nile Virus between May 8 and October 31, 2002.


Equine:

Thirty (30) horses have tested positive for West Nile virus in Maryland in 2002:

6 horses in Anne Arundel county,
1 horse in Charles county,
1 horse in Dorchester county,
7 horses in Frederick county,
3 horses in Howard county,
2 horses in Montgomery county,
3 horses in Prince George's county,
5 horses in Washington county,
1 horse in Wicomico county
1 horse in Unknown county.

Mosquitoes:

A total of 7,206 mosquito pools were tested in Maryland from January 1 - December 31, 2002. Forty-six (46) mosquito pools in seven jurisdictions tested positive for West Nile virus in Maryland during that period.

2 pools in Anne Arundel county,
7 pools in Baltimore City,
4 pools in Baltimore County,
1 pool in Frederick County,
17 pools in Howard County,
3 pools in Montgomery county
12 pools in Prince George's county.

44 pools consisted of Culex species mosquitoes and 2 pools consisted of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

Note: Pool = group of mosquitoes


Humans:

Approximately 800 Maryland residents have been tested for WNV antibody since May 1st. Thirty-six (36) human WNV cases have been identified in 2002 from nine jurisdictions.

There were seven (7) WN-related fatalities in 2002.
